TRIBAL HOMEPAGES

Native, Aboriginal, First Nations Tribal Information
HERITAGE CONSULTING is the Main researcher and information source on Western Canadian Native/Fur Trade History and maintains more information on file than any other source. We specialize in Western Canadian Native and Historical information, but maintain files on over 1000 tribes. Our Bulletin Board maintains the most comprehensive on-line files on the history of Indian Tribes. In addition, our files are expanding into broader areas of world history and tribal peoples. ************************************************************* * * * We are honored to announce that we have been selected for * * the award of a Links2Go Key Resource Award for our site, * * as being in the top 20 Internet resource sites on Narive * * & fur trade history and genealogy. As we have never tried * * for any awards and are a simple text site without fancy * * graphics, we feel especially honored. The award is based * * on the number of users to the site. Thank you, to all our * * visitors. * * * ************************************************************* Because the Government of Alberta has in the past three years has tried to shut down our site by setting up a competing site with government funding (which, incidntally, is having trouble getting off the ground to provide information), your help is greatly appreciated in helping us keep this site on line and getting letting it grow once again. We are now also able to answer questions and inquiries on line or confidentially by e-mail. To help support our efforts to bring more knowlege of the early Aboriginal and Fur Trade History into the public domain, please see our Questions and Sponsorship page.

This site has contained original research and copyrighted material. The Government of the Province of Alberta (Canada) in 2006 gave $7,000,000.00 to a competing Archives Network to gather this data and tap into our databank to duplicate our databank for their own use and disposition, including the charging of fees. The Government of Canada has given the Roots Project of McGill University and the University of Alberta $1,000,000.00 for a similar purpose. It was the intent of this network to cut and paste our data to their site. Consequently, we have removed this site from the Public Domain. Original information research by our organization will no longer be available on Internet. The Public Domain data from this site should again be available from a Government website in about 5 years (bets?). This matter appeared before the Alberta Government Ethics Commission, and was found to have enough merit to be forwarded on to the Provincial Ombundsman, who's office found enough cause to order an investigation into possible inappropirate action by the Government of Alberta. The government generated a vast pile of paper to justify itself. The Ethics Commissioner ruled that: had it been done by a bureaucrat, it would have been unwarranted and illegal interference by government in private industry BUT, this was done at the direction of the Minister and The Minister is not bound by such conflict legislation. Since the Minister is can do as he pleases, this government action was not inappropriate. As it happens, this agency so far has not been able to duplicate our data and place it on line. Since we have been researching this data and analysing it for 40 years it is unlikely they will catch up for years to come yet. If you would like to see this our site back on line, rather than waiting years for the government-backed agent to get up to speed, contact any of the following to voice your request. NOTE: This is an unofficial homepage posted by Heritage Consulting Consulting. SOTO BANDS LISTING The Western Cree index How to get more detailed information Saulteaux First Nation, Cochin, Saskatchewan Canada Saulteaux First Nation has often been presumed to be a successor band to the Jackfish Lake Band, which ceased to exist as such after the 1885 rebellion. This is not the case. The Saulteaux Band/First Nation came into being when 6 families signed an Adhesion to Treaty 8 in 1954 as the Saulteaux Band. At least five of the six came from outside the area. One of the families had some years previously married into the Jackfish Lake people. One of the families had previously been part of Big Bear's Band. Two families became affiliated with Big Bear's Band in the early 1880's. Four of the families were principally of Chippewa/Soto origins, one of Cree origin and one of unknown origin. One family moved in from elsewhere, and one family is of unknown origin. History of these families can be traced back to the 1860's and, for some, to the 1790's. Just when these families moved into the Jackfish Lake area remains obscure, but seems to have been after 1900 and probably after 1920. Two of the families had been living at Chitek Lake and did not move to Jackfish Lake until after 1920. The reason for having settled in the Jackfish Lake-Chitek Lake area was undoubltedly because this was a relatively isolated frontier area with ample opportunity for living by hunting and trapping. It should be noted that at about the time that these families moved into the area there was considerable persecution of Metis families who were, by Canadian law, Non-Persons, devoid or all legal rights and protection. In this part of Saskatchewan particularly Metis families were being rounded up and deported to out-of-the-way locations in the woodlands north of the Saskatchewan River. Hence the band is of relatively late origins, forming only shortly before signing of Treaty in 1954 and with only nominal historical connection with the original Jackfish Lake band, and and even less connection with the Jackfish Lake area.

Since the Minister is can do as he pleases, this government action was not inappropriate. As it happens, this agency so far has not been able to duplicate our data and place it on line. This site has contained original research and copyrighted material. The Government of the Province of Alberta (Canada) in 2006 gave $7,000,000.00 to a competing Archives Network to gather this data and tap into our databank to duplicate our databank of their own use and disposition, including the charging of fees. The Government of Canada has given the Roots Project of McGill University and the University of Alberta $1,000,000.00 for a similar purpose. It was the intent of this network to cut and paste our data to their site. Consequently, we have removed this site from the Public Domain. Oiginal information research by our organization will no longer be available on Internet. The Public Domain data from this site should again be available from a Government website in about 5 years (bets?).
